Local businesses are rallying round to support a charity golf day hosted by rock legend K. K, Downing at his new course, Astbury Hall, Chelmarsh, near Bridgnorth.
The event, which takes place on Wednesday, 16 September, offers opportunities to play alongside wellknown sporting celebrities, and even Judas Priest guitarist K. K. himself will be dusting off his clubs to take part. All money raised is in aid of the Lord’s Taverners charity fund for underprivileged and disabled children, and sponsors include Stewart Hickman of Stanmore Properties Ltd and Vauxhall dealers Evans Halshaw of Worfield, who are donating a brand new car to the winner of the hole in one competition.
Several other prizes are on offer in a raffle, to be held at a dinner that evening at the Bull’s Head, Chelmarsh, and the organisers would like to hear from any other businesses willing to sponsor a hole or add to the raffle prizes.
“We are looking for a few more teams to take part in the event, but numbers will be limited,” spokesman
David Coleman said. “There are two types of teams: you can play in your own four-ball, or if you want to play alongside former sports celebrities as part of your four-ball we can arrange that.” The golf day will provide an opportunity for players and spectators to check out this superb new course. England and Worcestershire cricketer Neil Radford, who played it recently, declared it ‘a real gem.’

Brian Coyne, chairman of Bridgnorth Beavers, was presented with the mayor’s award, a Certificate of Merit for his services to the community, following the town’s annual mayor-making ceremony.
Brian, along with wife Sue who was recently made a MBE for her community work, has been a stalwart supporter of the Beavers, a dynamic and positive group of people with disabilities. The couple help to organize activities, outings and support for the members, and the award was given in recognition of Brian’s selfless voluntary work with the organisation, which this year celebrated its 25th anniversary.
Shropshire-born artist Amanda Logan held a successful exhibition at Pure Interiors in Bridgnorth’s High Street.
Amanda trained at Chelsea School of Art, and specialises in trompe l’oeil, hand painted furniture and interiors. Past commissions include creating the scenery for windows in top London stores, including Harrods, Harvey Nichols and Fortnum and Mason.
After a period of commercial work designing cards and wrapping paper, Amanda returned to Shropshire to have a family. Since then, she has been busy with commissions for portraits, furniture decoration and the creation of ‘interiors with a difference.’ Her next exhibition should be held around
Christmas.
Hollywood legend Mickey Rooney and his wife Jan visited the SVR in Bridgnorth to take part in a photoshoot for Midlands and London based model agency Sapphires.
The couple posed on the platform with Jack, a dog owned by two other visitors to the popular tourist attraction, who just happened to be passing. They loaned Jack to the Rooneys, who are dedicated animal lovers, for the shot shown here.
The shoot was part of Sapphire’s second series of celebrity portraits, and the couple were impressed with the town.
“This was the Rooney’s first visit to Bridgnorth, and they loved it very much,” said Neely Reyes, founder of the award-winning agency. “They say they would love to come back. They are both huge animal lovers, and when Jack walked by minding his own business we just had to borrow him. We would love his owners to have a copy of the photo – if they recognise him, please get in touch.” www.sapphiresmodelmanagement.co.uk/contact for details.
A crew of swashbuckling buccaneers from Bridgnorth YFC captured first prize for their decorated float at the West Mid Show.
The award was presented by show president David Bellamy, and the pleased pirates were delighted to be invited to represent Shropshire in the Lord Mayor’s Show in London later in the year.
“I keep having to pinch myself; it’s so unreal,” said the club’s chairman Sarah Needs. “It makes me so proud to be part of Bridgnorth YFC and Shropshire.”
The club is hoping that as many as possible of the young farmers in the county will make the trip to London to support their entry.
