Buried treasure at William Brooks

Students at Much Wenlock’s William Brookes School have been working on a project to assemble a time capsule to be buried beneath the floor of the new school building. The capsule will mark the 200th anniversary of William Penny Brookes’ birth, the ongoing preparations for the 2012 London Olympics, and particularly the start of construction of the new William Brookes School.
The capsule will contain three elements, representing the school, the community and Wenlock Olympians. Items relating to these will be placed in sealed containers for future generations to discover. Artefacts collected so far include a school uniform and prospectus, poems, photographs and medals.
”The idea is to give a general snapshot of life in Much Wenlock and the William Brookes School of today,” student Jon Begley told the Review. “We hope that people in years to come will unearth the capsule and find that what we’ve placed in there is of interest to the historians of the time.”

Imagine support for Team Cameron

Bridgnorth PR company Imagine Communications has donated £500 to help raise funds in memory of local toddler Cameron Brown, who tragically lost his life to asthma aged just 2 years 4 months.
The donation will be used by the little boy’s parents, Gemma and Ashley, to provide Team Cameron tee shirts for the 50 or so members taking part in the Bridgnorth Walk. The balance will go to Cameron’s Fund at Asthma UK.

Micah Stewart, co-director of Imagine Communications said: “I have known Ashley and Gemma for a few years and as a father of a child the same age as Cameron I cannot begin to imagine the pain and heartbreak they have suffered. By supporting Team Cameron it will hopefully help the team’s efforts at the Bridgnorth Walk in further raising awareness of Asthma UK and encourage others, too.”
If you are interested in supporting Team Cameron, please contact Gemma and Ashley on 01746 766256 or donations can be made on Cameron’s web page, www.justgiving.com/teamcameron2009

Goodbye to the BDC

Bridgnorth District Council, which had for the past 35 years been responsible for providing services to householders throughout the district, ceased to exist on April 1st.
Administration now passes to the new unitary Shropshire Council, which incorporates all of the county’s former local authorities at district level. Telford and Wrekin split off to form an autonomous unitary authority of its own several years ago, and is not affected by the changeover.
In an emotional farewell ceremony, former staff watched chief executive John Harmeston lock the door of the Westgate offices for the last time as council leader Elizabeth Yeomans lowered the Union flag. Elections to the new authority will take place in June, when 74 seats will be contested.
Under the new arrangements, a series of 28 Local Joint Committees will meet on a regular basis to ensure council decision-making meets the needs of local communities. Funding is to be made available to enable the process to go forward, with more than a million pounds earmarked for spending on local needs and priorities. The groups will be made up of parish, town and unitary councillors, and each will have the power to assess the services provided by the new council.

Refreshments, cakes and light lunches will be served, and there will be stalls selling bric-a-brac, books, plants etc. plus a display of bees and honey.
The gorgeous gardens of Lower Hall will be open on Saturday and Sunday, and Worfield Nurseries will again be selling plants at wholesale prices.
