FESTIVAL FUN IN LUDLOW

Jool Holland

Fourteen outstanding events over 10 days will see Ludlow come to life for the Arts Festival 2013.

The entertainment begins on Friday 21 June with an opening night gala show and the first of three performances of The Gruffalo’s Child.

Big names appearing include 10CC, Jools Holland, comics Paul Merton and Reginald D Hunter, top international pianist Young-Choon Park and The Hollies. There’s also jazz, Shakespeare and fireworks.

Four open-air events will be held in the castle’s outer bailey, while the majority take place in a fully-seated big top theatre.

Running alongside the new Ludlow Arts Festival will be Ludlow Fringe.

Over 100 events – from art to music and from poetry to comedy and children’s events – will take place. Ticket prices will be kept low, with the most expensive tickets held to £12, and most events will be either free or under a fiver.

Amongst the events will be comedy from Lucy Porter, writers’ talks from Jo Brand and Andy Kershaw, legendary rocker Steve Gibbons singing the songs of Bob Dylan, cabaret, jazz and poetry.

Residents and visitors can join in with a friendly local party as Lower Corve Street Does Fringe, or enjoy getting hands-on with Auntie Mabel’s vintage craft stall right in the middle of historic Castle Square.

The Emergency Poet will be on hand to dispense essential poetic first aid from her vintage 1950’s ambulance. There will also be competitions, a flash mob, a summer’s play, street artists and free workshops for children.

Ludlow Fringe co-ordinator Anita Bigsby said: ”This energetic young festival has attracted dozens of artists, musicians, poets, writers, comedians, dancers, singers and performers of all ages on a real wave of enthusiasm. This truly is a Fringe Festival that’s coming straight out of the heart of the community – this is what people want to do for the town, and everyone can be a part of it.”
